THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR

The LORD is a man of war; the LORD is his name. (Exod. 15:3 ESV)

We return to our study of the Battle of Jericho, and note how the Lord is changing a group of wilderness wanderers, into people of gigantic faith, and fearsome warriors.  In the past forty years the Lord had been training Israel, to be stout people, so they could claim their land, that was taken over by squatters.  They must conquer their own land, since the present settlers, lived by a credo: ‘finder’s keepers.’

Israel had been hammered into people of faith.  Their previous marginal respect of spiritual life has been chipped away, and now Israel is ready to claim their heritage.  The Lord has made them into a nation who was focused on spreading the reputation of the Lord to other people groups, and to set up the Commonwealth of Israel, the place that will be the center of spiritual outreach to the rest of the world.

In the beginning of Joshua 6, the Lord tells their leader, Joshua, that Israel must act like God: be holy, and see like God with eyes of faith (6:2).  Now comes the gritty work of taking their inheritance.  Spiritual truth and work are married to action in the natural realm.

So, is Israel just being a bully, kicking the people of Jericho off the land they’ve inhabited for some time? Isn’t possession 9/10th of the law?  Nope.  The people of Jericho are well aware of the fact that they are squatters, and they know they must relinquish the property where they have settled.  But, they refused to give Israel, Israel’s land.  They’ve had plenty of time to relocate, but they’ve decided they want their present location.

The people of Jericho knew they were squatting?  Yep.

First, the title deed of the land was given by the Lord, to Abraham: On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates… (Gen. 15:18 ESV).  The Lord, Creator and owner of the earth, gives the land of the Mid-east to Israel – and he never rescinded that promise.

The people of Jericho know this, Rahab a citizen of Jericho said: and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. (Jos. 2:9 ESV).  For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea… (2:10), And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. (2:11), that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” (2:13).

The people of Jericho knew they should not be on Israel’s property, and they knew if they do not move, there will be fighting, and unfortunately – death.  What will Israel to do?

THE WARRIOR’S PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, reveal to us a added measure of your glory, and let us be refreshed by your presence.  When you call to our heart, give us courage to invite you into our experience, and do not let us be satisfied without your presence.

If we are living in shame, lift that from our mind, and cleanse us.  If we experience hurt, comfort us.  If we desire more of your blessing, grant it.  Encourage us to yearn for a life of purity, and let your holiness be our focus and our mission.  Let your holiness be so comfortable that we yearn for it to be our character. Let nothing replace it.  Let no person, nor thing, nor ideal come before your holiness, in our life.  Let it be our desire, that when people see it in us – they will want you.

We pray this in Jesus’ name.  Amen
