Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV)
Humility is a leadership trait universally admired, but have you noticed how difficult it is to be a genuinely humble person?
A few years ago, I heard an Army three-star general speak about a humbling moment in his life. While traveling by jet to Korea, he sat next to a Private First Class (PFC) dressed in his Class A uniform. The general wore civilian clothes. The two began to talk. When asked about his rank and role in the Army, the general began to wax eloquent in describing his many responsibilities as a flag officer.
As the general concluded his answers to the young soldier’s questions, the PFC startled the officer with his response. “Wow, sir! That’s a lot of responsibility! I hope you don’t screw it up.”
The general felt convicted. He had let his pride take over in an effort to impress the young man. But the exact opposite happened.
True humility begins by recognizing our total dependence on God.
