Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

Being young and looking young has advantages in many settings, but not so when you’re talking about being a leader in the military.

Why is this? Because your followers are commanded by law to follow your orders, even in the toughest of situations. Your subordinates want to know if they can trust your leadership-your knowledge, your judgement, and your ability to make good decisions in crisis moments.

If you are a young military leader, don’t let youth or inexperience cause you to doubt your abilities. God knows. He placed you in your present leadership role.

Some practical steps will help:

  • Trust God’s wisdom selecting you as a leader.
  • Be open to learning and improving, especially from your warriors.
  • Don’t let occasional failure cause you to question your leadership.

When tough circumstances arise, God will help you lead effectively.
