Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. Exodus 2:12 (NIV)
It’s almost inevitable. Leaders stumble, usually sooner than later. In an effort to get off to a strong start, leaders sometimes act too soon.
Most of these mistakes are not missteps of the heart, but of the mind. Moses had been called by God to lead his people out of bondage from the cruel Egyptians. But he jumped the gun and killed an Egyptian who had been beating a fellow Hebrew.
Read Exodus 2:11-15. In one sense Moses did the right thing- but much too soon. Pharoah chased Moses out of the country. Moses wound up spending forty years on the backside of the desert.
As a leader, can you identify with Moses in this story? It’s embarrassing, it’s frustrating, but it’s not huge in the long run. The Lord will honor your motivation to serve Him. God used Moses in amazing ways.
But let’s be smart. All leaders make early mistakes, but why not limit the number? Learn from Scripture, learn from others. Seek God’s guidance.
The Lord will use you in powerful ways.
