Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 (NIV)
Many, if not most commanders, publish their command philosophy. The document helps subordinates to know at the outset the commander’s approach to leading the organization.
Personally, I’ve never read a single commander’s philosophy that tells followers that their leader is gentle and humble in heart. But think about this: The Commander of the Universe is gentle and humble in heart and wants His followers to know.
Knowing this about Jesus can provide enormous comfort and assurance as you lead. Your Heavenly Commander is not some power-hungry dictator who wants to crush you like a bug. He’s loving, He’s gentle, and He’s humble.
What a great example to follow! He’s all of the above, but don’t forget that He is also all-knowing, ever present, and all powerful.
Can you blend these qualities to become an effective military leader? Absolutely! Jesus is the most effective leader in history.
Be strong, be competent, be firm. But also be gentle and humble in heart. This approached worked for Jesus. It will work for you.
