Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks. Isaiah 5:22 (NIV)

My entire adult life has been spent serving military people. Truly, they are some of the finest, most selfless public servants I know.

But that’s not to say they are perfect or immune to challenges prevalent within our culture. One of the most destructive is excessive use of alcohol.

So, what are your experiences or observations regarding drinking alcohol in the military? Have you witnessed the damage and destruction to careers, warriors, and their families, to include death?

I have. Let me make one overarching observation. Virtually every case I’m familiar with involved a warrior or family failing to exercise self-control regarding the use of alcohol. Too much alcohol results in lowered inhibitions and people doing dumb things they would never do while sober.

You say, “I can control it.” Maybe … just maybe. A few can, but most don’t.

Let me recommend a better solution. Cut drinking out completely.
