“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” 2 Samuel 9:7 (NIV)
As long as I can remember, there has been debate in military circles over this question: Which is more important: accomplishing the mission or caring for your warriors?
For me personally, it has never been an issue. Do both. If you take care of your people, your mission will get done.
Effective leaders love their warriors and take care of them, from the least to the greatest. In this verse, King David reaches out to Mephibosheth, a cripple, and offers to take care of him for the remainder of his life.
Caring for those under your charge is hard. It takes time, effort, and often there is no visible return on investment.
Look around. Are there those under your command who are crippled? Maybe not literally, but in some way they are suffering and need support and encouragement.
Reach out and touch a life. It’s the right thing to do.
