for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica (2 Timothy 4:10).

For most soldiers who have risked their lives in combat, the act of desertion is a crime of the worst kind.

And yet, many Christians participate in a form of desertion when it comes to serving in God’s army. Knowingly or unknowingly, they draw back from any form of participation in worship or Christian service. The excuses for such actions are endless, but they are just that- excuses.

In this verse, Paul reports that Demas chose to desert because he loved the ways of this world more than Christ.

Soldiers in God’s Army should always keep this thought in mind. On his way to the cross, Jesus could have deserted us. But He didn’t, and He never will.

How can we desert Him who gave His life for us?
