Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! 2 Samuel 12:7 (NIV)

Speaking truth to power can be hazardous to your health. History is packed with examples of men and women who dared speak truth to rulers and died as the result.

David, Israel’s second king, was clearly chosen by God to lead Israel. But he lost his way and allowed lust to lead him into sin. He committed adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, which resulted in her becoming pregnant. Attempting to hide his wrongdoing, David arranged for Uriah’s certain death by putting him at the most dangerous place in battle. David’s actions were akin to murder.

David’s disgraceful behavior might have gone unnoticed were it not for a prophet named Nathan, who, learning of David’s sin, had the courage to confront him.

Nathan’s courage was rewarded. David confessed his sin and submitted himself to the Lord’s punishment.

Displaying courage like that of Nathan did doesn’t always have a good outcome. Sometimes those in power respond very differently and seek revenge toward the person who has confronted them.

Speaking truth to power requires courage. Doing so carries risks, but it’s the right thing to do.
