David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” 1 Samuel 17:32 (NIV)

Great leadership can require great risks. David was willing to risk it all.

Since crossing into the Promised Land, the people of Israel were constantly at war with surrounding nations. This time the rival was the ferocious seafaring nation of Philistia.

Picture the scene. The armies of Israel and Philistia were camped on opposite sides of the high ground overlooking the Valley of Elah. Each day a Philistine giant named Goliath would step out of the ranks and challenge any Israeli warrior to fight him in one-on-one combat. The losing side would serve the victor.

Not surprisingly, no takers. What Israelite soldier was foolish enough to fight a nine-foot giant?

Amazingly, a teenage shepherd boy told King Saul that he was up to the challenge, but no one believed David could defeat Goliath. That is, no one but David and the God he served.

Against all odds, David killed the giant. How did he do it? By simply trusting the God he served.

God had David’s back. He has your back, too.
