Tithing — the very topic that some of you dreaded. But please don’t stop reading. You may be pleasantly surprised. A tithe means “a tenth part.” Some Christian denominations teach that believers are to give a tenth of their income to the work of God. Other church groups don’t feel that a strict tithe is required, but rather that having a good attitude in what one gives is what matters.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. ‘Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it'” (Malachi 3:10, NKJV).
So, is tithing a requirement? I don’t know. But I do know that in this verse the Lord challenges us to “test Him.” He promises to bless us abundantly if we will trust Him in our giving. Over 30 years ago, Judy and I decided to take the Lord up on His offer to test Him. God has passed the test with flying colors. He has blessed us abundantly. We can’t afford not to tithe!
