It’s Not Just A Name

The tiny hamlet of Dusty, Washington, is an unincorporated town of only eleven or twelve residents and a few livestock. It’s located in Southeast Washington and is part of the Palouse farming region. Dusty doesn’t get in the headlines very often. Its greatest claim to fame is that it’s the home of country musician Wylie Gustafson, of Wylie and the Wild West.

But on April 28, 2020, the little town of Dusty made the news.  Why? Well, it seems that there was a severe dust storm in the area which brought visibility down to zero. A car and an eighteen-wheeler collided as a result and blocked State Route 26 for six hours.  The National Weather Service issued a “blowing dust” advisory for the town of Dusty and its surrounding area.

When weather channels announced the advisory, they all had a chuckle over the “coincidence” that there was a dust storm near a town called Dusty. But it was no coincidence. People familiar with the town understand that this little hamlet has earned its name. There tends to be a lot of blowing dust there. It wasn’t named after Dusty Springfield or Dusty Rhodes. It was named in honor of one of its primary characteristics. It’s a dusty place.

So, if you don’t like blowing dust, don’t move to a town called Dusty. It’s giving you a clue of what to expect.

And if you don’t like heartache and misery then don’t follow a character named the Father of Lies, Murderer (John 8:44), Deceiver (2 Corinthians 11:3), Accuser (Revelation 12:10), Slanderer (devil), and Adversary (Satan). His name is a clue to his character and to what he’ll try to do to you.

Instead, follow someone named Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6), Savior (Matthew 1:21), the Truth (John 14:6), Counselor (Isaiah 9:6), the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), Light of the World (John 8:12), the LORD who Heals you (Exodus 15:26), the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25), and the LORD who Provides (Genesis 22:14). His many titles give us a clue to His nature and an idea of what to expect from Him. He won’t deceive you, for He cannot lie.  The storehouses of blessings He has to share with you are infinite. So, He couldn’t possibly want to take anything away from you – unless it’s a disease or some self-destructive sin. He only yearns for you, your friendship, and your love. And in His embrace is healing, love, acceptance, and perfect peace.

PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, please let me flee into Your loving arms.  Forgive my sins, cleanse me in Your blood, and clothe me in Your righteousness. Change my heart so that it hungers for what is good.  Make me into a true child of My heavenly Father and help me to always follow You. Amen.
