He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NIV)
Wise military leaders understand and believe this verse. Though human effort is certainly required, ultimately the outcome of the battle belongs to the Lord. Time and again God has come to the rescue of leaders and armies who have called upon His name.
One historical example occurred in the ninth century BC. The Ammonites with the help of the Moabites attacked Judah. In the natural their combined armies could easily have crushed Judah’s forces.
Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, sought the Lord with urgent prayer. This verse from 2 Chronicles 20:15 contains God’s response. The Lord intervened miraculously and caused the opposing forces to ambush each other. Thousands died while Jehoshaphat’s forces didn’t have to lift a finger.
Don’t misunderstand. As a military leader, God expects you to prepare, train, and equip those under your authority-that part is your responsibility.
Do your part. God will do His.
