Yellowstone Lake covers an area of 136 square miles.
It is the largest freshwater lake in North America that is over 7,000 feet in elevation. And the water is cold! In the heat of the summer, the water temperature of Yellowstone Lake barely gets above 41 degree Fahrenheit, making it far too cold for swimming. In the winter, the lake’s entire surface freezes to a thickness of three feet. This makes Yellowstone Lake one of the largest ice sheets in the contiguous United States.
But beneath the ice sheet, at the bottom of the lake, are thermal vents that pump boiling hot water into the lake. Even when it looks like Yellowstone Lake has become hopelessly frozen and inhospitable, invigorating hot water bubbles up from the massive magma chambers that underlie most of Yellowstone National Park and melt holes right through the three-foot thick ice. Sometimes our world seems “frozen over” – by sin, indifference, and evil – killing every vestige of warmth and goodness in the earth. Just watch the news and you’ll get an overdose of humanity’s dark side. It will convince you that our world is ripe and ready for judgment.
But don’t despair. God is forever working behind the scenes and below the surface. By His Holy Spirit He is warming the hearts of believers, convicting the hearts of sinners, and kindling a revival among humanity. And when things seem their worst, a revival will bubble up seemingly out of nowhere.
In Elijah’s time it looked as though all zeal for the LORD was completely chilled and the hearts of God’s people were frozen over with apathy and apostasy. But God informed Elijah that he was not alone and that God had preserved 7,000 people who remained faithful to Him (1 Kings 19:18). The heathen may rage against God and mock all who love Him. But we need to remember God’s admonition: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10).
Dear Father in heaven, please bless our nation and deliver it from all its evils. O God in heaven, breathe a revival in our land. Kindle the hearts of Americans and fill them with a fiery zeal for justice and mercy. Turn them to You in faith and repentance and to each other in love and reconciliation. Spirit of God, wage war against the spiritual forces of wickedness that seek to destroy our nation. Raise up a standard against the enemy that has come in like a flood. Turn us to You, O God, and save us, for Christ’s sake. Amen.
