Impress them [God’s Word] on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:7)
In society today, too many parents are relying on teachers at school to instruct their children in the things they should learn. Thank the Lord for teachers, but in matters relating to God, parents are instructed to take the lead. Not teachers at public school. Not even Sunday school teachers. Parents. As a parent, does this intimidate you a bit?
I confess I have been a bit unsure and hesitant about my ability to carry out this responsibility. Teaching adults is one thing, but teaching kids is a daunting task! Take heart. We parents can do this. Look at the verse above and break it down. It’s achievable.
Here’s how. As you spend time with your kids, look for little teaching moments. Before a meal, say a blessing. At the playground, talk about how your child should play with other kids. On a walk, point out to your child the beauty of God’s creation. Classroom lectures are not usually needed. Just talk about the love of your life — God.
