A LESSON FROM THE SPORK

I hate sporks. Some people call them foons. What are they? Sporks and foons are a hybrid combination of a spoon and fork. They have an incomplete (or freakish) scoop of a spoon and stubby (and virtually useless) prongs of a fork. The idea has been around since the 1800s. But recently became more widely used in the second half of the last century. Especially in the U.S., Japan, and the U.K.

A Lesson

Why do I not like them? They do a poor job as either a fork or a spoon. They constitute a model of inefficiency. The spork is leaky as a spoon (especially with soup) and inept as a fork. That’s probably why they are primarily used in fast food joints, for backpacking, and in prisons. The military, I understand, has taken a liking to them as well. Not surprising.

But the spork does contain a profound lesson for us. That is to say, the spork is a cutlery example of how Biological Evolution could never have taken place. Consider the supposed evolution of the fish to amphibian. Based on the predictions of Evolution, we should expect to find the fossil record filled with intermediate evolutionary forms. We should find examples of a 90% fin-10% leg, a 80% fin-20% leg, a 70% fin-30% leg, 50% fin-50% leg until we finally reach the 100% leg.

However, not only are such examples absent from the fossil record—we only find the fully-designed/fully-efficient forms. But the entire concept of many hybrid intermediate forms fails the common sense test. Which is more efficient, a 100% fin or a 50-50 combination fin-leg. Can you imagine trying to paddle up a river with a combination paddle-pitch fork? The hybrid is efficient at nothing. Perhaps even more problematic is the concept of a half-arm/half-wing. However, such a monstrosity is incapable of grasping fruit from a tree or grasping air from the sky.

Predictions

Yet this is the heart of Evolution. Therefore, it predicts all these hybrid characteristics that are demonstrably inefficient and would have doomed any intermediate forms to extinction. For example, such hybrid characteristics would make a life form incapable of out-swimming, out-running, or taking flight from predators. The reality is that wings are designed for flying. Legs are designed for walking. And fins are designed for swimming. And the designer is God.

Certainly, Scripture contains an orderly and rational creation account that seems to make more and more sense. Especially as science confronts Evolution with more and more hurdles to overcome. So, Evolution was a clever idea in Mid-Victorian times. As a result, at the time spontaneous generation of life was widely accepted. So, biology didn’t have a clue as to how incredibly complex the simplest living organism is. But Evolution’s day has passed and it’s high time we recognize that science has simply outgrown this archaic idea.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It doesn’t take much faith to believe that. Far more faith is required to believe that chemicals possess some magical, self-assembling and self-organizing properties. In conclusion, whereby they will eventually become people.

PRAYER:

Dear Father in heaven, I need to know the truth of my origins. Am I the result of random chance mutations? Or, am I the handiwork of Your skilled and loving hands? Please, God, open my eyes and help me to know for sure. Reveal Yourself to me, I pray. Amen.
