Learning to Be Still

Military training teaches us to be leaders of action — set priorities, make rapid decisions, and execute plans decisively. This is fine for work, but what about other times? For example, how do we set priorities in order to balance work with family? Setting priorities and maintaining balance is challenging. As finite human beings, we just plain “ain’t smart enough” to do this without God’s help.

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10, NKJV).

Psalm 46:10 provides solid guidance. It commands us to know God. How? By being still. We must learn to be still if we are to know God better. This will require practice, because from birth being still is not something we do naturally.

So how does this work? It begins by stopping what we are doing and giving God our full attention. Read a few Bible verses. Ask the Lord what they mean, and then listen to what the Holy Spirit speaks to your heart. At first, this will seem very hard. Start with short segments of time, like 5 minutes. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself being still before God and hearing Him like you never have before. Try it!
