Needs Versus Wants

In comparison with every other nation on earth, America is rich. As such, we have become a very consumer-oriented society. People want what they want, and they want it now. It’s a mentality of entitlement. This attitude can be quite damaging in numerous ways, even in the way we view God and read His Word.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, NKJV).

This verse provides a good example of a portion of Scripture that is frequently misinterpreted. It clearly states that God will meet all of our “needs” through the glorious riches of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, many people think, Christians included, that this verse means that God will supply us with everything we desire.

We simply have to pray and claim it as a blessing from God. But think about it for a minute. Has this been your experience? I doubt it has. God is not some cosmic vending machine. So what’s the “take away” from this verse? It’s simply that we have an all-powerful and loving God who will provide for our needs and give us contentment with what He provides. Could we ask for any more?
