Remembering the past helps us keep perspective.
Picture the scene. A teenage boy is pleading his case before the king of Israel. A godless giant named Goliath has defied both the armies of mighty Israel and the God they serve. No Israeli warrior has mustered the courage to fight Goliath one-on-one-except David. King Saul is certain David is volunteering himself for a suicide mission. David is a brave boy, but no match for this Philistine killing machine. And besides, if David loses to Goliath, Israel loses as well. Risky business.
“The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37, NKJV).
At some time during the conversation, David gives Saul a riveting stare along with words to this effect. “Look, King Saul, God has delivered from the lion and bear. Our mighty God will deliver me from this ugly bully as well.” That did it. Saul saw that David wasn’t hallucinating. He had perspective solidly grounded on what God had done before. Don’t forget. God has done mighty things in your life. And He will again!
