Understandably, people have a natural inclination to avoid discomfort.

Our culture responds to suffering in a variety of ways, from medicating to seeking legal compensation. But God’s Word offers a different perspective. While we rarely associate difficulties with joy, the Bible says we can rejoice in the knowledge that struggles bring spiritual growth.

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing,” (James 1:2–4, NKJV).

Everyone faces tough times. Some problems arise simply because we live in a fallen, sinful world. Others are the result of spiritual opposition from the devil and those who serve him. God doesn’t bring problems on us, but He sometimes allows us to go through trials. God knows such times can strengthen our faith; draw us closer to Him; refocus our priorities; teach us patience and obedience; allow us to experience His grace and power; and point others to His truth.

No matter what you’re facing, God is with you. He brings joy from the most unlikely scenarios. He longs to turn your deepest wounds into your greatest blessings. When you view life from an eternal perspective, you really can praise God in every situation.
