Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come upon you from your youth till now. (2 Samuel 19:7)

This verse contains good counsel for any leader. David and his army had just fought a tough battle and won, but his son Absalom had been killed during the fighting. David was consumed with grief for his fallen son.

Joab, a veteran field general in King David’s army, tells his leader the straight truth. He knows David is mourning the death of his son, Absalom. Nevertheless, the armies and people of Israel need David’s leadership — NOW. David heeds the advice. He puts his personal grief on the back burner and encourages his followers. He wins their hearts.

As difficult as it may be at times, leaders must continue to put the needs of others above their own. Leaders, go encourage your people — NOW!
