Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
War requires its participants to do some hard things, especially in the taking of human life. It’s not unusual for warriors to carry feelings of guilt and shame for long periods, even to their grave. This is not God’s intent. He offers forgiveness and comfort for anyone who will seek Him with a sincere heart.
Consider the situation at Golgotha on the day Jesus died. He was crucified with two criminals, one on his right, the other on his left. One criminal hurled insults at Jesus. But the other petitioned Him: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Implied with his statement was the criminal’s request for forgiveness for his sins. Note Jesus’ response in today’s verse. He forgave the criminal and assured the man that heaven awaited him. The request came just in time, only hours before the criminal’s death.
But why should you and I wait? If you are wrestling with guilt, shame, or any other problem, simply make your request to Jesus. No situation is beyond God’s ability to forgive or comfort. Seek forgiveness NOW.
