“How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when clearly it is Ocean.” This assessment came from the well-respected author and inventor Arthur C. Clarke. It makes perfect sense. After all, water covers a vast seven-tenths of the planets mass!
Weight of the World
Yet, when you think about it, though water covers most of the earth’s upper surface, water only makes up one fiftieth of one percent of the earth’s mass (the earth weighs six million- billion- billion kilograms). Initially, Arthur C. Clark’s assessment of our planet’s nature seems so obvious. Yet when we pause to look deeper, we realize earth is not characterized by stormy seas but by rock-solid earth.
Aren’t we sometimes guilty of doing the same when we assess our lives? “My life is filled with uncertainty. I experience nothing but trouble. There’s no security in my life – none at all. All of life is a stormy sea.”
It’s a lie! The angel of the Lord encamps around you night and day to protect and deliver you (Psalm 34:7). The love of God surrounds and undergirds you (Romans 8:35-39), turns your every curse into a blessing (Deuteronomy 23:5), and causes all things (even tragedies) to work together for your ultimate good (Romans 8:28). God is for you, not against you (Romans 8:31). Christ died for you, rose from the dead for you, and now ever lives to intercede for you (Romans 8:33-34). Your life is not as unstable as a stormy sea. Look deeper and you will realize your life rests upon the solid rock of God’s unfailing love.
PRAYER
Dear Father in heaven, please remove the mist of depression and doubt that clouds my mind and obscures my view of You. Help me to look beyond the storms and beyond the clouds to see the sunshine of Your love and to rest in Your eternal salvation. Amen.
