Stress can improve performance. Can you recall experiences when you did something well beyond your normal capabilities? The pressure was on, and you delivered! God has engineered us to grow through stressful situations. A great example occurs in the Old Testament with the story of David and Goliath. Picture the scene. A fight to death between the shepherd boy, David, and the Philistine giant, Goliath, was soon to decide the outcome of the battle between Israel and Philistia.
“Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground” (1 Samuel 17:49, NKJV).
David was approximately 5 1/2 feet tall. Goliath stood over 9 feet. Physically it was no match. But little David was up to the challenge. With a slingshot and one stone he scored a knock out, killing Goliath and securing victory for Israel. History records that David went on to be a great warrior, poet, musician, and king over Israel. Facing stressful circumstances, even life-threatening ones? Call on God and let Him help you. Do your part and God will do His.
