“Oh no!  My wallet’s gone!”

In The Moment

Not a pleasant discovery, especially in the heart of New York City.  But Billy Davis, Jr., of the Fifth Dimension, checked and re-checked his pockets and sure enough, his wallet was gone.  The year was 1969 and The Fifth Dimension was performing at the Americana Hotel.

Realizing that the wallet must have fallen from his pocket in a cab, he and the rest of the group contacted the cab company.  To his great relief, a man had found the wallet and was trying to get in touch with Billy to return it.  But the man did not want a reward. He did desire that Billy and the rest of the group – Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, and Lamonte McLamore – attend a new Broadway show that he was producing that year, Hair.

They did.  And as the group for the first time heard the song, “Age of Aquarius,” they remarked to each other, “This is a song that we’ve got to record.  It’s just great!”

A New Sunrise

Spc. John "Rocky" Montoya, M2 gunner attached to Laghman Provincial Reconstruction Team, scans his sector of fire while on a combat patrol to sweep for roadside bomb triggermen in Alingar District, Laghman Province, Aug. 8. The PRT is serving as the Quick Reaction Force, ready to respond at a moment's notice to unexpected incidents in the province. The QRF was called up to escort the explosives ordinance disposal team to a found IED site while clearing previous blast sites along the way. (U.S. Air Force photo/ Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane)

They took the song to their producer, who agreed to fund their recording of it, provided they combine it with another song from Hair, “Let the Sun Shine.” They recorded the song-combo that very year and “Age of Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine” became their greatest hit ever.  And it all began with a lost wallet.

So often we forget that God is working behind the scenes. He often allows some of the worst events, to bring about good in our lives.  The Scripture reminds us, “God works all things together for good, for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven, when things go wrong in my life, remind me that You are working behind the scenes. That You are turning my curses into blessings and working my evil circumstances into something good.  Help me to do my part by submitting to You and seeking your will for my life. Amen.
