Many poke fun at the name. They say that “Old Faithful” is hardly faithful. For, although the intervals between eruptions average 92 minutes, they can vary between 51 to 120 minutes.
Critics also say Old Faithful’s eruptions vary in their height (130-180 feet), duration (1 ½ – 5 minutes), and volume (4,000 – 8,500 gallons of water). For the more impatient viewers, each of Old Faithful’s main eruptions is preceded by several tantalizing “false alarms.” “That doesn’t seem so faithful to me,” the critics chide.
No? Then consider Steamboat Geyser, also in Yellowstone National Park. Steamboat Geyser is the tallest active geyser in the world. It boasts of eruptions that can reach heights of nearly 400 feet – 3 times higher than Old Faithful. Would you like to see it? Good luck. Steamboat Geyser only erupts every 4 days to 50 years! Don’t hold your breath waiting for this one. Consequently, while Old Faithful gets 25,000 visitors every day in the summer (3.4 million throughout the year). Steamboat Geyser, with all its claims to glory, only gets a few.
In the final analysis, Old Faithful is very faithful. Because of this, faithfulness and dependability win out over flair and claims to glory every time. Remember this when choosing friends, partners, and members of a team. Faithfulness and dependability are valuable qualities. Remember this regarding your own character and work habits. Faithfulness and dependability will take you places that charm and boasting will not. The Scripture says, “A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished” (Proverbs 28:20) and “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Dear Father in heaven, please help me to be faithful in my walk with You and in my commitments to others. In a world that is infatuated with flair, forge in me faithfulness, dependability, and trustworthiness. Amen.
