Who among us hasn’t wished he or she were more courageous on occasion? The Bible offers a surprising ingredient in genuine bravery—righteousness. It may sound counterintuitive at first glance. Too often, we equate righteousness with some surface tendency to be kind or nice. In reality, righteousness is a fundamental commitment to goodness, a commitment so strong it is willing to risk life itself in the right cause.

“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1, NKJV).

God’s Word gives many personal examples that demonstrate living righteously will give us the courage of His presence and help. Conversely, wickedness will cause our fears to multiply.

In fact, the wicked run when there is no threat at all. Why is that? When we live according to our wicked desires, we take hold of the destruction that sin brings. We merit God’s judgment rather than His help. Our conscience condemns us for our thoughts and actions.

Determine to base your life on righteous principles. With God’s abiding presence and help, you will stand up for what is right regardless of the consequences.
