Some mistakenly believe that being a Christian insulates us from bad things.

Not true! In fact, being a Christian in many parts of the world today brings persecution, even to the point of death. Jesus knew that some of His disciples were fearful, so He gave them a big-picture perspective. As this passage tells us, the only person we need to fear is God Himself. He is the one who has power over life and death, heaven and hell. When our faith is in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, our eternity is certain. The worst that can happen to us in this life is physical death. But for the Christian, physical death is simply the threshold to eternal life. And eternity is a long time!

“‘Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows’” (Matthew 10:27-31, NKJV).
