My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and  slow to become angry.  (James 1:19)

If you’re married, how many times could a giant blowout have been avoided if you had just listened before you spoke? For most of us, the answer would be, “too many!” Communication in marriage is a challenge, but it’s even tougher when one or both partners don’t listen to what the other is saying.

The apostle James gives sage advice in this verse. When trying to communicate, everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak. Listening comes first, not speaking. Knowing to listen before speaking is one thing. Practicing it in daily living is quite another. Consider the benefits.

First, when we listen before we speak, we’re much more likely to understand what our wives are trying to say.

Second, the simple act of listening is a powerful way to give value to our spouse.

Finally, listening before we speak often prevents misunderstanding or disagreement from ever starting in the first place. Listen first, then speak. It’s God’s idea.
