Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.  (Ephesians 4:15)

God has designed marriage to be the foundational relationship for society. Logically, communication in marriage needs to be truthful and shared with love. Even in the strongest marriages, this is hard to do. We all fail at times. Unfortunately, the landscape of humanity is dotted with failed marriages and wrecked lives largely because couples chose not speak the truth in love with each other.

Paul’s advice to the Ephesian Christians not only emphasizes speaking the truth in love, but also reminds us that doing this is part of a growth process. In other words, we are still developing in our maturity as individuals and as couples in marriage. Whether we’ve been married 4 months, 4 years, or 40 years, we still have room to grow.

Are you speaking the truth in love to your spouse? Is your partner being honest with you? The point of this devotional is not to put you on a guilt trip. It’s simply to encourage you obey God. Want to do better? You can. It starts with a decision. Speak the truth in love.
