So David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you.” (2 Samuel 5:19)

King David was a brave soldier and proven commander in combat. Undoubtedly he went through troop-leading procedures in a thorough manner, especially prior to combat. But note this verse. David also sought guidance from the Lord. And he is not alone.

Through the centuries military leaders have continued to turn to the Lord when the stakes are high. Our human tendency is to place too much emphasis on our knowledge, skills and experience. All of these can help, but seeking the Lord’s guidance is the most important step we can take prior to entering a battle — any kind of battle. The Lord wants us to seek his guidance in the daily challenges of life. Issues like marriage, raising children, handling finances, and setting priorities are all important in our lives. We don’t have to handle them on our own.

What about you? Do you consult your Heavenly Commander prior to the combat situations in life?
