Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. (3 John 1:11)

Many of us would agree that a lot of what we see in America today is not good. Almost everywhere we turn we see examples of how things should not be. As military men and women, can we use the excuse that “everyone else is doing it”?

God says we are not to imitate the evil we see, but rather to imitate that which is good. Are you taking God’s command seriously? In your everyday life in the military, are you setting the right example? Your actions don’t affect just you. Others may imitate what you do.

Consider this small example. At public restaurants, some Christians pray just like they do at home. Others don’t. Why? Because they are more concerned about what others may think than they are about following God. Imitating God sometimes takes courage.

And remember, it is not only your reputation at stake. God’s name is honored or shamed by what you say and do.
