A recent article from Livescience.com described several ribbon worm species that can regrow their heads and brains after decapitation.
Yes, ribbon worms (of the phylum Nemertea) have heads and brains. During the research, scientists snipped off the tails and heads off of 22 different species of ribbon worms. The scientist discovered that all the species could regrow their tails. Also, the ribbon worms could survive for weeks or months after impalement. But five of the species were able to regrow both heads and brains completely.
This capability is amazing. Regeneration is pretty rare among animals. The few who can regrow lost appendages include sea stars, hydras, fish, frogs, salamanders, spiders, and worms. But regenerating lost heads and brains are on an altogether higher level.
Unfortunately, instead of explaining how ribbon worms are capable of doing this, it wasted space trying to explain how this ability could evolve. Are there secondary or tertiary brains elsewhere in the body to direct such regeneration? Is there a supply of stem cells in the worm that can be genetically programmed to regenerate another head and brain? Are all the separate cells of the body capable of working in unison without the brain dictating them? However, the article made no attempt to answer this.
However, the question of how an animal can possibly survive decapitation, or regrow what was lost, made me think. “How can a nation survive decapitation?” How could America survive its government being overthrown without suffering an economic disaster and a deep plunge in its quality of life?
Well, take a lesson from the ribbon worm discussion. To survive decapitation, the worm needs other resources throughout its body to help direct its life-processes. But what about a nation? What would those resources be for a country to survive?
Above all, a nation would have to be righteous—otherwise, it descends in mob rule or a dictatorship. Surviving an overthrow would require a Christ-like character in the hearts of its people. Then people would have to be capable of governing themselves, apart from taking orders from a dictator. As a result, the nation’s citizens would each have to rule their own spirit and passions. They’d have to recognize their obligation to abide by the existing laws and full it. They would have to support the common good of all citizens. They’d have to look out for each other and not only pursue their own pleasures.
The Founding Fathers recognized this as they embarked on an experiment in self-governance. John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.” However, James Madison put it this way. “Before any man can be considered as a member of civil society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe.”
Another statement of Madison’s. “We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all our political institutions… upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” No wonder that George Washington proclaimed, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
Christians in America
The Founding Fathers recognized that each member of society must see himself and herself as responsible and accountable to God. Their conscience must calibrate to the morals of the Judeo-Christian religion. This is why religious instruction and the building of the Church is so critical to our survival. Otherwise, Americans will be a bunch of suckers to a tyrant. They’ll be overly dependent upon the government to direct their lives, to care for them, and to keep the peace. People who rule themselves by the tenets of the Gospel can survive the decapitation of their government. They can easily regrow another—just like the one before.
Can you also see why the agenda of America’s enemies is to snuff out religion? And to corrupt America’s morals, and make it utterly dependent upon an ever-growing government and a ruling elite?
Certainly, the Church in America needs to seek revival, strength, and inspiration from God. Therefore, we need to pray for an outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit. In addition, we need to commit ourselves to the proclamation of the Gospel. For the Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16).
But Christian believers across America must also unite. They must voice their political opposition to those who seek to divide our Nation. Furthermore, Christians need to be bold about their faith. Bold no matter how much they are vilified for it.
Above all, Christians must pray for the nation in which God has planted them. This is precisely what God told the Jewish exiles to do while they languished in wicked Babylon (Jer. 29:7). In conclusion, we will answer to God for our failure to do this. As well as suffer the misery of tyranny on earth.
Almighty merciful Father, we call out to You through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We pray that You will save America from all its enemies—at home and beyond our borders. Dear God, breathe a revival throughout America. By Your Holy Spirit, turn our hearts to You in faith and repentance and to each other in love and reconciliation. Create in our hearts, O God, a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Like Jesus Christ, make us love righteousness and hate iniquity. Awaken our conscience. Open our eyes to our own sinfulness. And reveal Yourself to us, and write Your law on our hearts.
Prayer for Leaders
Please, dear Lord, raise up men and women of God to lead our Nation. Raise up men and women of God to be our Presidents, congressmen, senators, and Supreme Court justices. Raise up men and women of God to be our educators in public schools and in universities. Please raise up men and women of God to be authors, intellectuals, scientists, and scholars. Raise up men and women of God to be journalists and news reporters. And please raise up believers in Jesus Christ to be entertainers, businessmen, CEOs, and bankers. Raise up men and women of God in America to be athletes, celebrities, heroes, and role models for our children and youth.
Dear God, heal our nation. Save us for Jesus’ sake. Raise America to true greatness and use America as Your instrument of peace and the Gospel throughout the world. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
