Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)
During ancient times, the walls around a city provided major protection against the enemy. If an attacker could destroy the walls, the inhabitants of that city quickly became losers. At the personal level, our walls can be quickly broken down, particularly if we don’t exercise self-control during times of stress.
In the military today, we tend to minimize situations when someone gets stressed, loses control and curses or throws an object across the room. No big deal, we think. But consequences can range from slight to catastrophic.
A number of years ago, I had to visit one of my soldiers in jail, who was being held for manslaughter. He was at home and becoming very stressed because his 18-month-old son wouldn’t stop crying. The soldier got the idea to give his child a bath. The kid still wouldn’t stop yelling. The young father lost it, and slammed the youngster’s head against the side of the tub. Tragically, his son suffered a concussion and died. During times of stress, don’t blow your cool.
The Lord will help you.
