I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. (Psalm 38:6)
Depression is no respecter of persons. It can strike anyone. If you have never experienced a prolonged season of depression, consider yourself fortunate. But don’t assume it can’t happen to you. David was a man after God’s own heart, but experienced times of severe depression. Note David’s words about himself: “all day long I go about mourning.”
What triggers depression? Many things. David was under constant attack by his enemies, both physical and verbal. Additionally, even his family and friends were avoiding him during his time of suffering and pain. But David didn’t allow depression to destroy him. In his desperation he sought the Lord. God heard his prayers and restored him.
Depression is widespread here in America. Just look at the ads on TV for medication that claims to help combat it. Sometimes medication is genuinely needed. But God is our best medicine. He can help you identify the root causes of your depression and heal you from the inside out. Depressed? Talk with God about it.
