When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and set the palace on fire around him. So he died…” (1 Kings 16:18)

Suicide is not a new issue. Zimri was a king who briefly ruled the ancient Northern Kingdom of Israel. When when his own people laid siege to his city, he saw no way out. He set fire to his palace and remained until his death. Taking one’s own life is the ultimate tragedy.

From the individual’s point of view, leaving this world seems like the only way out. But it’s not, and it never is. So how do we make certain we don’t make this fatal decision?

First, recognize that the stresses of life can feel overwhelming to any of us. No one is immune. Secondly, decide now that suicide is never an alternative for your life. Even though thoughts of suicide are not uncommon, decide now that you will never exercise this option. And don’t just think about yourself. Suicide of a loved one devastates a spouse, family, and friends.

Finally, remember that your life is precious to God. He gave you life. When the walls of your world seem to close in around you, cry out to God. He will rescue you. That’s just what He does.
