Why have you rejected us forever, O God? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture? (Psalm 74:1)

It’s just part of the human condition. When bad things happen and seem to keep happening, we are prone to lose our perspective. The psalmist certainly had.

This opening verse of Psalm 74 accuses God of having rejected Israel forever. Was the accusation true? No- absolutely not. But for the writer, it felt that way. Israel had sinned for decades. Present circumstances merely reflected the consequences of disobedience. Jerusalem was in shambles and enemies were gloating.

I visited a young warrior in the hospital who felt God was rejecting him. He was in a funk, and I could hardly blame him. Major skin graft surgery on his left thigh wasn’t working. Weeks went by with no progress. Finally one day we were together and he broke down in tears. Weeping bitterly, I agreed with him in prayer as he poured his heart out to God. A few days later, healing began. In a few weeks he had made full recovery. God had not rejected him after all.

Neither will God reject you.
