For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:8)
Few know the value of PT (physical training) more than the soldier. Being “fit to fight” can make the difference between winning and losing — between living and dying. But physical fitness is not enough by itself. Paul, a seasoned veteran in the Lord’s army, warned a younger soldier named Timothy that godliness is even more important than PT. Why? PT applies to this life only.
Godliness holds promise, now and for the future — even through eternity. Spiritual fitness also has huge impact on this life. Want proof? Consider the number of very physically fit soldiers who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, but who are still experiencing mega problems back in the States. Tragically, some have even turned to suicide as the answer. Spiritual fitness can be very effective toward maintaining good mental and emotional health. Many soldiers have relied on faith in God to handle difficult problems.
Bottom line: Stay physically fit, but don’t be shortsighted. Make spiritual training a part of your routine. It will pay eternal rewards!
